 Mendocino coast redwood grove.

"In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, -- no disgrace, no calamity (leaving me my eyes), which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground, -- my head bathed by the blithe air and uplifted into infinite space, -- all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball; I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part and parcel of God. The name of the nearest friend sounds then foreign and accidental: to be brothers, to be acquaintences, master or servant, is then a trifle and a disturbance. I am the lover of uncontained and immortal beauty. In the wilderness, I find something more dear and connate than in streets or villages. In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the horizon, man beholds somewhat as beautiful as his own nature."

 - Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1836

Do you run a martial arts school that primarily specializes in traditional or striking-based fighting arts?

Would you like to organize a group of your students for a  martial arts retreat devoted to developing submission grappling skills?

Would you like to spend a weekend training with world-class grappling instructors on a remote stretch of northern California's redwood coast?

Exploring the Mendocino Coast

Your private training camp will include 6-hours total instruction at our Fort Bragg grappling studio, in addition to 2 fully catered barbecues on the Mendocino coast.

Outside of the grappling sessions and the post-training barbecues, your group will be free to explore the area independently.

An entire weekend could be split between training and simply relaxing at the forested seaside headlands. For the more restless, however, there is much exploring to be had!

The Mendocino coast is best known for its awe-inspiring natural environment, namely its secluded rugged coastline and old-growth redwood forests. Martial-artists of all backgrounds, from beginners to world champions, have an opportunity to better appreciate the spiritual aspect of their art while training in this amazing place. We're sure you'll find yourself content here after a good training session.

Camp Overview

Private weekend Grappling Camps can be booked at any time by groups of 6 or more. These intensive training camps include 6-hours total instruction (3-hour Saturday seminar and 3-hour Sunday seminar), and are instructed by our home instructors.
After our training sessions, barbecues are held on the headlands overlooking the ocean at Russian Gulch Creek Canyon. This incredible location is only minutes from our dojo, and offers perhaps the most incredible views on California's Pacific coast.

Where to Stay

Campgrounds, cabins, and inns are  available on the Mendocino coast within minutes of our dojo.

Grappler's Retreat will be happy to advise you on campgrounds and/or lodging options (lodging is not included in the price of the retreat).

About the Campgounds:

Camping is available at Russian Gulch State Park (8 minutes from our training facility), Van Damme State Park (15 minutes from our training facility), and MacKerricher State Park (just a 5 minute drive from our training facility).

Hot showers and clean restroom facilities are available at all the campgrounds. Just bring a towel, some extra clothes, and your toothbrush (nights and mornings can be chilly on the Mendocino coast, so be sure to bring plenty of warm layers).

Lodging

Cabins and Inns are also available along the Mendocino coast, and offer an economical way to visit for those preferring not to camp. We are happy to provide you with all the assistance you need in finding lodging that best suits your requirements.
